Shalom Beth Am Family,
While driving in the car recently, Joshua spontaneously blurted out from the back seat, “Do you know what I love most about Chanukah?” “What?” Ellen and I asked, expecting to hear the traditional exclamation, “presents.” Instead, Joshua declared, “Lighting the candles. I love lighting the candles and seeing them glow.” Our hearts just melted. It was so precious because, while we do indulge in the gift giving traditions, we are so happy to know that it is the simple customs and rituals that are also penetrating his Chanukah experience.
I am sure you also have plenty of meaningful family rituals that happen in your home because Chanukah lends itself to these home experiences. And yet, CHANUKAH IS NOT JUST FOR THE HOME!!!! Consider sharing in the Chanukah spirit with your community. We have some wonderful and engaging opportunities for adults and families over the next few days in order to heighten your Chanukah enjoyment.
TONIGHT AT WINE WITH WEINER AT 7:30 PM – During this adults only gathering, we will explore the intricacies, the secrets, and even the “wrong turns” of this holiday while sipping on wine or any other beverage of your choosing. Additionally, we will also explore our feelings about the “Jerusalem Capital situation” as well as other topics that strike our fancy. FRIDAY AT CHANUKAH SHABBAT SERVICES AT 8:00 PM – Come celebrate Chanukah with the community as we light our amazing Chanukah menorah and sing songs with the 3rd and 4th graders. It’s also a great time for our religious school children to get their service credit. SUNDAY AT SINGING AT THE MALL AT 5:00 – Yearly, the entire Jewish community of Northern Westchester gathers at the JV Mall for fun and comradery. Come celebrate and sing songs with other Jewish families at the Mall on Sunday. There are gifts and crafts as well as a great community spirit.
Whether it is learning, singing or just being with community, celebrating Chanukah outside of your home traditions can be a wonderful way to add to the holiday for you and your family. I hope to see you at any of these events.
